To create a rewards program using Highnote's rewards feature, you must create reward earn rules and redemptions. In the live environment, the Highnote team will assist with this process. This guide provides an overview of creating a rewards program using the Highnote dashboard's test environment.
Create a reward earn rule
Note: Once the rewards feature is enabled for your card product, you can create reward earn rules in the test environment. In the live environment, the Highnote team will assist with creating your reward earn rules.
Reward earn rules define how account holders earn rules. Highnote's rewards feature supports two types of reward earn rules:
- MCC-based reward earn rules: Earn rewards for dollars spent at specific merchant category codes (MCCs)
- Default reward earn rules: Earn rewards on transactions that don’t qualify for specific earning rules
When configuring a rewards program, you can offer one type of earn rule or both types. For example, you could use MCC-based earn rules to offer 3% cash back on travel and default earn rules to offer 1% cash back on everything else.
Use the following steps to create a reward earn rule in the test environment:
- From the Highnote dashboard, click Rewards from the left-hand navigation.
- On the Earn Rules tab, click Create Earn Rule.
- Choose an earn rule Type and provide a Name.
- Set a Points Multiplier. This field sets how many points are earned for every $1 spent. For example, if you set this field to "2", account holders will earn two points for every $1 spent.
- For MCC rules, choose Merchant Categories to accrue rewards at. If you are creating a default earn rule, skip to Step 6.
- Click Create Earn Rule.
Guidelines
Note the following guidelines when creating an MCC-based earn rule:
- If a card product uses both MCC-based and default earn rules, Highnote prioritizes the MCC-based earn rule.
- You can't create two different MCC-based earn rules with the same MCC. For example, you can't create an earn rule for 3% cash back at a specific restaurant and 2% cash back at a different restaurant.
Attach reward earn rule to card product
You must attach reward earn rules to a card product for account holders to start earning rewards. Use the following steps to attach a reward earn rule to a card product in the test environment:
- From the Highnote dashboard, click the name of your card product from the left-hand navigation. If you only have one card product, skip to Step 2.
- Click Product Settings and select the Settings tab.
- In the Rewards section of the settings page, ensure you are on the Earn Rules tab.
- Click Attach and use the toggles to select your earn rule(s). You can attach multiple earn rules to a card product, but Highnote always prioritizes MCC rules.
- Set a Start Date.
- Optional - Set an End Date.
Create a redemption rule
Note: Once the rewards feature is enabled for your card product, you can create reward redemptions in the test environment. In the live environment, the Highnote team will assist with creating your reward redemptions.
Reward redemptions define how account holders redeem rewards. At this time, the following redemption options are available:
- Statement credit: Redeem rewards for a credit on your next statement
- Rewards using a third-party system: Use a third-party system to offer reward redemptions, and manually adjust rewards ledgers in Highnote
If you are offering reward redemptions through a third-party system, you do not need to configure reward redemptions in Highnote. For information on manually adjusting rewards, see Redeem rewards.
Use the following steps to configure a statement credit reward redemption in the test environment:
- From the Highnote dashboard, click Rewards from the left-hand navigation.
- Open the Redemption Rules tab and click Create Redemption Rule.
- Provide a name.
- Enter a redemption rate. This field sets the rate at which account holders can redeem statement credits. For example, if you set this field to "0.5", account holders can redeem one point for a $0.50 statement credit.
- Click Create Reward Redemption Configuration.
Attach redemption rule to card product
You must attach redemption rules to a card product for account holders to redeem rewards for statement credits. Use the following steps to attach a redemption rule to a card product in the test environment:
- From the Highnote dashboard, click the name of your card product from the left-hand navigation. If you only have one card product, skip to Step 2.
- Click Product Settings and select the Settings tab.
- In the Rewards section of the settings page, click the Redemption Rules tab.
- Click Attach and use the toggles to select your redemption rule.
- Set a Start Date.
- Optional - Set an End Date.
- Click Attach Reward Redemption Rule.
