Transaction events fall into several different transaction categories, which are called transaction processing types. This guide provides an overview of transaction processing types and common scenarios for each type.
Overview
Transaction processing types apply to each transaction event, signifying the type of transaction that occurred. For example, a transaction event may have a transaction processing type of Goods and Services, which signifies that the transaction occurred due to an exchange of goods and services.
Transaction processing types do not represent actual transaction events. Refer to the following definitions that explain the difference between a transaction event and a transaction processing type:
- Transaction event: This represents an event in the transaction lifecycle. For more information on the transaction lifecycle, see Transaction basics.
- Transaction processing type: This represents the processing type for a single transaction event.
Find transaction processing type
The transaction processing type for a given transaction event can be found on the Transaction Details page of the dashboard. Use the following steps to locate the transaction processing type of a transaction event:
- From the Highnote dashboard, click on your card product name. If you only have one card product, skip to Step 2.
- Click the Transactions tab.
- Locate your transaction and click the transaction to open the transaction details page.

Goods and Services with Cash Disbursement | A debit transaction for goods and services that includes a cash disbursement | A customer purchases groceries at a supermarket and requests cash back during the transaction |
Non-Cash Financial for Funding | A debit transaction for a non-cash financial funding operation | A cardholder transfers funds from their card to an investment account |
Quasi Cash and Scrip | A debit transaction for quasi-cash or scrip purchases | A cardholder purchases casino chips or a money order |
Funds Withdrawal for Electric Purchase | A debit transaction for withdrawing funds to an electronic purse | A cardholder transfers money from their bank card to a digital wallet |
Payment to Another Party | A debit transaction for making a payment to another party | A cardholder makes a bill payment through their online banking platform |
Payment Debit | A peer-to-peer (P2P) debit transaction | A cardholder sends money to a friend using a P2P payment service |
Returns | A credit transaction for a return of goods or services | A customer returns a purchase, and the merchant refunds the amount to the customer's card |
Deposits | A credit transaction for deposits or deposit payments | A cardholder deposits funds into their account at an ATM |
Adjustment Credit | A credit transaction adjustment | A customer overpaid for a purchase and receives a credit for the amount overpaid |
Payment from Third Party | A credit transaction from a payment received from a third party | A cardholder receives a payment from a third party, such as a refund from a canceled event |
Payment Credit | A credit transaction from a peer-to-peer (P2P) credit payment | A cardholder receives a payment from a friend using a P2P payment service |
Payment Enclosed | A credit transaction where the payment is enclosed | A cardholder receives a payment or check enclosed with a document, for example, a bill |
Available Funds Inquiry | An inquiry transaction into the available funds in an account | A cardholder checks their available balance at an ATM |
Balance Inquiry | An inquiry transaction into the balance of an account | A cardholder checks their account balance at an ATM or through an online banking service |
Account Verification | A verification transaction for an account | A cardholder's account is verified during an online purchase to ensure the card is valid and has sufficient funds |
Cardholder Accounts Transfer | A transfer transaction between the cardholder's accounts | A cardholder transfers money from their savings account to their checking account |
PIN Unblock | A transaction that unblocks a Personal Identification Number (PIN) | A cardholder enters their PIN incorrectly multiple times and has their card blocked. They call their bank to unblock the PIN |
PIN Change | A transaction that changes a Personal Identification Number (PIN) | A cardholder changes their PIN at an ATM or through their online banking service |
Notification to Bank | A transaction notifying the bank of specific information or a specific event | A cardholder notifies their bank about a lost or stolen card or suspicious transaction activity |
Load of Prepaid or Stored Value Card |
A credit transaction for loading funds onto a prepaid or stored-value card |
A cardholder adds funds to a prepaid card for future use |
Fee Collection Debit | A debit transaction for collecting miscellaneous fees | The bank collects a monthly account maintenance fee from the cardholder's account |
Original Credit | A credit transaction that enables funds to be credited to account numbers for a purpose other than refunding a purchase | A cardholder receives a payment into their account, such as a salary from an employer or a tax refund |
Funds Disbursement Credit | A credit transaction used to remit miscellaneous fees | The bank credits the cardholder's account with funds, such as interest on a savings account or a refund of a fee |
ATM Mini Statement | A transaction that represents a request to provide transaction history via ATM | A cardholder requests a mini statement from an ATM, which provides a brief summary of recent transactions |
Eligibility Inquiry | An inquiry transaction into the eligibility of a cardholder or account | A financial institution checks the cardholder's eligibility for a specific service, such as a loan or credit limit increase |
